Ed McDowell of the Eastwoods Carrick
League has won Event Two in Newtownards with a grinding
victory over Sam Newell, 8 – 6.
Sam Newell had raced into a convincing 3-0 lead and
it looked ominous for Ed that runner up spot would
be all he could achieve.
In fact, Ed must think himself lucky that he even
got to the final after his semi-final opponent Clem
Howard missed what was a relatively easy black to
win 7-5.
With some excellent safety play and solid potting,
however, he managed to claw back the deficit to 3-3.
What then ensued was some jockeying for position by
both players but Sam just seemed that bit more tactically
aware; it seemed inevitable that Sam was indeed going
to capture his first tour win.
That is, until in the later stages of the match,
Sam, 6-5 up, inexplicably missed his red attempting
a cut into the middle. With the two shots that followed,
Ed McDowell showed his composure by closing out the
frame. Ed McDowell seemed to be reinvigorated by this
and went on to win the next two frames and the match.
Congratulations to Ed who now moves up into second
place in the overall NIPA rankings.
Next event moves to Hustlers in Strabane on 9th and
10th December.

News in from the first event in the Northern Ireland
Pool Tour...
The current Northern Ireland Champion Brian Crilly
has proven that he isn't a one hit wonder by winning
event one in Coleraine.
After some clinical potting and finishing in the
early rounds, he just managed to scrape through his
quarter final match against Ewel Stewart, who went
in off the black in the final frame.
He found his semi-final match a little easier, sweeping
aside Davy Tosh of Coleraine 6-3. In the final he
just held on to defeat the brilliant Tom McCorry 7-6.
Well done, Brian.
Dates for Event Five of the Tour
have now been confirmed as 17th and 18th February
2007. Thanks go to the organisers of the Ballymena
Festival of Pool for making these dates available
to us.
